The Most Important Commandment

Due to the recent murder of Tyre Nichols, I feel compelled to share this reflection. I will post the originally planned reflection tomorrow. Please pray.

When one of the teachers of the law asked Jesus, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” Jesus responded, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

Hatred, brutality, violence, injustice, racism, sexism, and all other isms can be summed up in one word, SIN. We can peacefully protest and demand systemic reform, and I believe we should; however until we address the sin in our lives, homes, and society, we will relive the same horrendous scene.

Joshua 24:15 states: “But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” True change, revolutionary change, starts at home. It starts with committing to love God because though we did not deserve it, He first loved us. When we understand that because of His infinite love for us, we also receive His mercy and abundant grace; we can, out of gratitude and humility, learn to love others.

My heart aches for the Nichols family and anyone who has lost a loved one due to hatred and senseless violence. I pray that we, as Christians, as a society, and as a nation,  ask the Lord for His forgiveness. That we repent of our sins and strive to be a people that answer the call of Micah 6:8 to “do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.”

This is my prayer. May it be yours as well.

Amen,
