Mom!

Reflection

It is a simple three-letter word, but when it rests on the tongue of a young child, adolescent or even a grown adult, its significance packs a powerful punch. It represents our closest and purist bond from conception to birth. Although our relationships with our moms might vary depending on our unique circumstances, Godly moms and mom figures provide something unique and special in our lives. When heard echoing off the walls of the home, a child’s voice calling out for their mom can mean anything from:  “I am not feeling well and need your comfort” to “Have you seen my math notebook? Please help me find it.” Paired with the typical cynical tone of the adolescent, it can morph into a combination of “Oh my gosh, you are embarrassing me” and “No one likes me, I am dumb”, and perhaps the unspoken thought, “I desparately need you.” For the spiritually mature adult, a “mom” represents unconditional love and care, a watchful eye, and a well-timed word of wisdom.

Application

Wisdom is often personified in the book of Proverbs as a woman. (Prov 31:20-33)  In the final chapter, in a passage attributed to King Lemuel, the author describes the impact of a Godly mother’s wisdom on her family. He writes:

26 She opens her mouth in wisdom,

And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.

27 She looks well to the ways of her household,

And does not eat the bread of idleness.

28. Her children rise up and bless her;

Her husband also, and he praises her, saying:

“Many daughters have done nobly, But you excel them all.”

A Godly mom or mom figure's positive impact in the home or their circle of influence is profound. She imparts wisdom, moulds character, and exemplifies a work ethic. Her love is a sacrificial love, putting the needs of others ahead of her own. The fruit of her labour may not appear immediately. There are difficult seasons, bad parent-teacher conferences, foolish mistakes and many other challenges associated with raising children in the modern world. However, verse twenty-eighty provides encouragement to moms or mom figures who have sacrificially poured themselves into their loved ones. One day, she will see the fruit of her endless labour of love. Her children will rise up and bless her and her husband (if he has any sense at all) will sing her praises.

Isaiah 40:11 states:

“He will tend his flock like a shepherd;

    he will gather the lambs in his arms;

he will carry them in his bosom,

    and gently lead those that are with young.”

After a weekend when this country paused to honour moms and mom figures, we, the team at Wisdom in a Whisper, would like to express our gratitude to the many women, moms and mom figures who have shaped who we are. You have gathered us up and kept us close to your heart. You are a reflection of God’s wisdom, patience, grace, guidance and courageous, limitless love. Thank you today and every day for all that you have been and all that you are.

With gratitude and love,

The Wisdom in a Whisper Team
